Tips on Maximizing Storage on iPhone

The amount of storage available on your iPhone is fixed upon purchase, ranging from 16GB to 64GB, depending on the configuration. You can quickly use up storage space by shooting pictures and videos, as well as by downloading games, apps and music. Because you can't increase the memory on your model, it's helpful to periodically prune unwanted items to maximize storage.
Unwanted Music
- The iPhone accesses the Internet via Wi-Fi as well as cellular data networks, enabling you to download music directly to the device. You can also rip CDs to MP3s on your computer and transfer them to your iPhone via the free iTunes application. You can't delete unwanted music from the iPhone. Launch iTunes on your computer, and then connect your iPhone to the computer with the included USB cable. Click the name of your iPhone in the left pane of the iTunes application window. Click the “Music” tab, then “Sync Music,” and then click to clear the check box next to the name of each album, artist and playlist you want to remove. Click “Sync” to remove the music from your iPhone.
Deleting Pictures via iPhone
- Apple’s iPhone has a built-in camera on the front and another on the back, both of which you can use to shoot videos and photos. After you accumulate a lot of photos and videos, you can delete the ones you no longer want to free up space. Press the home button, and then tap “Photos.” Tap “Camera Roll.” Thumbnails of your photos and videos appear. Tap a thumbnail, and then tap the trashcan icon and “Delete Photo” or “Delete Video” to confirm that you want to delete the file.
Deleting Pictures via Computer
- If you want to back up your photos and videos from the iPhone, click the Windows orb on your computer, and then click “Control Panel.” Click “Hardware and Sound,” and then click “Autoplay.” Click “Import Pictures Using Windows.” Connect your iPhone to a USB port on your computer. The Windows Autoplay dialog box appears. Click the “Import Pictures and Videos Using Windows” button, and then click “Import." Click the “Erase After Importing” check box to delete all the photos and videos from your iPhone after they’ve copied to your computer. Windows Photo Gallery launches and shows your imported photos and videos under Recently Imported.
Unused Apps and Games
- The iPhone comes with a variety of apps already installed, and you can download more apps as well as games directly to the device from Apple’s App Store. When you no longer want an app or a game, get rid of it to maximize storage. If you want to keep a copy of your app or game, connect your iPhone to a USB port on the computer, and then launch iTunes. Right-click the icon of your iPhone in the left pane of the iTunes window, and then click “Back Up” to copy your apps and games. You can always sync them back to your iPhone after you delete them from the device. Press and hold the icon of any app or game on the iPhone’s home screen until the icons all start wiggling. Tap the “X” on the upper left corner of an icon to delete the app or game. A message appears, asking you to confirm that you want to delete the item. Tap “Delete.” Press the home button to stop the rest of the icons from wiggling.
