Akismet is one of those WordPress anti-spam plugins, which is not only essential but also highly recommended. Spam comments are nothing new, and as soon as your WordPress blog goes live, you will start seeing lots of spam comments that look genuine. Akismet is one of the free solutions to combat WordPress spam. It’s an official free plugin by WordPress parent company Automattic.

In this quick post, I will share how you can get your Akismet API key for new installation. Earlier, one can get free Akismet API key by signing up for a free account on WordPress.com, but now they have setup a dedicated site for Akismet, and there is no button for free sign up. Even pricing page doesn’t show any free plan.

Easy way to get free Akismet API Key

Akismet is one of those WordPress plugins, which comes with the stock installation of WordPress. You need to add API key to activate and start using Akismet plugin. Now, when you click on Get API key, you will be directed to Akismet website, where you will be lost in finding the free option.

Here is the way out: Click on get Akismet API key, and select a personal option. <Direct link>

 

Click on Get started under Basic plan & on the next page, move the slider to extreme left under column which says ‘What is Akismet worth to you’

Fill out the Akismet sign up form, and you need to make only one change. In yearly contribution, move the slider to $0, and your payment option will be done. Finish the sign-up and click on continue. You will receive the Akismet API key via Email. If you ever lost your Akismet API key, you can use this link to recover lost API key.

Check your Email for the key, and add the API key into your Akismet configuration page. Once you have added the API key in configuration page, Akismet will start protecting your blog from spam comments.
